Lupus
For my first blog post I wanted to talk about is a disease call Lupus. Lupus is a disease that is not well know in our communities, but there are so many people becoming affect from it and I just wanted to share some information about it. This disease is an auto-immune disease where basically the inside of your body begins to attack its self. There are three types of Lupus, and each type can be deadly. This disease is found mostly in African American women from age 13+. It has also been found in men. The reason why I wanted to talk about Lupus is because I have lost someone dear to me from this disease, so now I want to educate everyone about it. We are having a Walk or Lupus on Oct 8 to honor those we have lost from this disease and those who have been affected by it. If you would like to know more information about the Walk for Lupus feel free to contact me.

I do not know enough about Lupus to comment on any types of assisted technology that would be associated with the disease. Could you fill me in a little bit more? I have included the link to another walk for lupus for those in the Des Moines area just in case anyone is interested. I do not know anything about it, but maybe this can help spread the word.

-Here is some more information about it and thank you for sharing the link with me.Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years. In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu). Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from these invaders. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues ("auto" means "self") and creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.
ReplyDelete-I mentioned earlier there are 3 types of Lupus, but I found out there are 4 and they are: There are generally four recognized forms or types of lupus: Cutaneous (skin) Lupus Erythematosus, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Drug-induced Erythematosus and Neonatal Lupus. This section will discuss in more detail the different forms of lupus and how they can affect you.
-They still don't know what causes this disease, and there is still no cure.
-The most common symptoms of lupus, which are the same for females and males, are:
*extreme fatigue (tiredness)
*headaches
*painful or swollen joints
*fever
*anemia (low numbers of red blood cells or hemoglobin, or low total blood volume)
*swelling (edema) in feet, legs, hands, and/or around eyes
*pain in chest on deep breathing (pleurisy)
*butterfly-shaped rash across cheeks and nose
*sun or light sensitivity (photosensitivity)
*hair loss
*abnormal blood clotting
*fingers turning white and/or blue when cold (Raynaud’s phenomenon)
*mouth or nose ulcers
-Many of these symptoms occur in other illnesses besides lupus. In fact, lupus is sometimes called "the great imitator" because its symptoms are often like the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, blood disorders, fibromyalgia, diabetes, thyroid problems, Lyme disease, and a number of heart, lung, muscle, and bone diseases.
